The Montana state legislative session is a pivotal time to champion clean energy solutions and protect the rights of solar energy consumers. At Montana Renewable Energy Association (MREA), we are committed to advancing renewable energy, ensuring energy affordability, and defending access to power generation from the sun and wind. Together, we can push for policies that secure a more resilient and sustainable energy trajectory for our state.

???? ACTION ALERTS????

(01/21/2025) - Add your name to the growing list of Montanans for solar shares (SB 188)!

WHAT: State lawmakers will hear a SB 188 this month to enable solar shares and subscription based solar (also called community solar). Read the bill here.
WHY: Right now, a large portion of Montana is locked out of business opportunities and cost-savings because government policy is standing in the way. Our solar shares bill would fix that.
ACTION: Show decision-makers that Montanans want the freedom to choose clean, cost-effective energy solutions.

Our Priorities for the 2025 Legislative Session

This year, MREA and our members are focused on:

  • Protecting solar rights: We are ensuring homeowners and businesses have the freedom to adopt solar energy without unnecessary restrictions.
  • Meeting electricity demands with clean generation: We are advocating for clean, low-cost energy solutions, including enabling-legislation for subscription based community solar, and promoting the development of scalable solar, wind, efficiency measures, and energy storage.
  • Expanding Transmission Access Responsibly: MREA supports infrastructure improvements to enhance access to renewable energy while safeguarding wildlife and natural landscapes.
  • Educating on Solar Consumer Protections: With an industry-led approach, MREA is raising awareness about consumer rights and best practices in the solar market to empower individuals and communities.

What You Can Do

The voices of our members during the Montana legislative session are ESSENTIAL. Lawmakers need to hear from you, the consumers, supporters, and industry professionals that are forging Montana's clean energy economy and improving lives. Here's what you can do to take action:

  1. Stay informed! - MREA hosts virtual legislative briefings for our members periodically January - April. We also send action alerts on key bills. Sign up here for MREA's Legislative Action Hub notifications.
  2. Join Montana Renewable Energy Business Day at the Capitol - If you or your company is interested in attending MREA's Renewable Energy Business Day and Luncheon in February, please email Makenna at Makenna@MontanaRenewables.org.
  3. Contact your Senators and Representatives - Montana’s part-time citizen legislature is unique—our lawmakers aren’t career politicians. They’re small business owners, ranchers, teachers, parents, retirees, and everyday people who temporarily step away from daily life to serve our state. Lawmakers are elected to serve YOU, their constituents. Visit this page to contact your elected officials and share why renewable energy is important to you. Not sure who represents you? Use this interactive map to find out.
  4. Become a member or donate to MREA - Your support means MREA will be better equipped to educate, communicate, and advocate for renewable energy year round. Donate here.
