Workshop Schedule (updated!)

9:00-9:45 am: Conservation and Efficiency (Stage A)
Skander Spies, Energetechs

Energy and water efficiency can significantly impact the size and cost of a renewable energy system.  Learn what you can do at home and work to save money.

9:00-9:45 am: Ground-Source Heat Pumps (Stage B)
Bill Yarus, AirWorks (invited)

How can 45 degree earth or water heat your Montana home in the dead of winter?  Open loop, closed loop, slinkies, and wells—how do ground-source heat pumps work, and could they work for you?

10:00-11:00 am - Solar Electricity Basics (Stage A)
Greg Guscio, REsource Energy

Think solar is expensive? When’s the last time you checked? Solar photovoltaic costs have dropped dramatically over the last 5 years, and there's never been a better time to produce your own power from the sun.

10:00-10:45 am - Electric Vehicles (Stage B)
Alicia Cox, Yellowstone-Teton Clean Energy Coalition and Rebecca Smith, electric vehicle owner

What if you never had to go to the gas station again? Come learn about electric vehicles, and what your options are in Montana.

11:00-11:45 am - Advanced Solar Electricity (Stage A)
Conor Darby, Onsite Energy

You know the basics, so what’s next?  Dig into design and components for more complex solar electric projects.

11:00-11:45 am - Financing and Incentives (Stage B)
Kathi Montgomery, Montana Department of Environmental Quality

There’s no such thing as a free lunch, but there are utility incentives, tax credits and low interest loans that can help you finance your renewable energy project. Find out which incentives will work for you, and see how your investment will net returns.

12:00 noon - Keynote Speaker: Tyson Slocum, Public Citizen

Affordable rooftop solar and energy efficiency technologies are revolutionizing the electric power industry, with profound implications for utilities and customers alike.  Hear about recent developments and where it’s all headed from Tyson Slocum, Director of Energy Programs at Public Citizen in Washington, D.C.

1:30-2:15 pm - Batteries and Controllers (Stage A)
Robin Gudgel, MidNite Solar

Batteries and controllers are essential components of off-grid renewable energy systems, and are increasingly used to provide back-up power for grid-tied systems as well. Learn the basics from a real expert.

1:30-2:15 pm - Renewable Energy Policy (Stage B)
Ben Brouwer, Montana Renewable Energy Association, and Henry Dykema, Sundance Solar Systems

Hear about Montana’s renewable energy policies and proposed changes that would make it easier and more affordable to develop renewable energy systems.

1:30-2:15 pm - Guided walking tour to Park Place parking structure, home of the largest solar electric system in Montana (Meet at MREA booth)
Janelle Stauff, MT Solar, and Don MacArthur, MMW Architects

Visit the largest solar electric array in Montana, atop the award-winning Park Place parking structure, and hear from the people that designed and built it.

2:15 pm - Drawing for door prizes and raffle

All fair attendees will have the chance to win great door prizes, including a solar electric kit valued at $1,000!  Stop by the MREA booth (fair headquarters) anytime before 2 pm for your free entry slip.

2:30-3:30 pm - Solar Hot Water Basics (Stage A)
Todd Hoitsma, Liquid Solar Systems

Solar water heaters have been around for more than a century, and no surprise…using the sun to heat water just makes sense.  Come learn what it's all about.

2:30-3:30 pm - Small Wind Generator Basics (Stage B)
Dave Ryan, Energy Consultant

Learn how to turn the wind's muscle into dollars in the bank.  You'll have a different opinion of Montana's winds when you install a wind turbine at your site!

3:30-4:00 pm - Advanced Solar Hot Water (Stage A)
Aaron Hanson, Axmen

Already know something about solar hot water?  Here’s your chance to go in-depth and get your questions answered.

3:30-4:00 pm - Advanced Small Wind Generators (Stage B)
Logan and Jenni Bryce, Pine Ridge Products

So you installed a wind turbine—now what? Talk to experts who have lived with small wind machines for more than a decade, and learn how to keep your turbine spinning.
